The choice of a 4x4 is easy when you know for what kind of utilisation you want tu use it. I won't speak of the SUVs that are, in my opinion too low for that.
All 4x4 is efficient in the desert; All depends on how you drive it and of your knowledge of dunes.
For a normal use, all 4x4 will suit. But, if you are going frequently on the desert, you want to surf some big dunes and you to play, the chlice is limited;
- Long chassis: permits to have fun and to be able to leave in family few days
- CATEGORY A: THE TOP (comfort, efficiency)

- TOYOTA LAND manual CRUISER V6 or V8
- CATEGORY B: CORRECT (enough powerfull)
- NISSAN PATHFINDER 4.5L
- TOYOTA PRADO 4 L
- MITSUBISHI PAJERO 3.5L & 3.8L (I had one the 3.5, I didn't find him reliable enough. After every exit, it was necessary to take him to service!)
- Short basis: to really have fun
- CATEGORY A: THE TOP (comfort, efficiency)
- NISSAN PATROL 4.5L
- JEEP WRANGLER SPORT 4.0L

modify the engine of your 4x4, honestly, according to me, it doesn't make sens. However to be pratical, it can be interesting to replace the original airfilter by a competition competiton one (easier to clean abd maintain).
I am nearly all weeks in the desert and I don't see the utility to modify deeply the 4x4.
On the other hand, to change tires is primordial. It influences a lot the behavior and the comfort of the 4x4. Avoid the Bridgestones (modàle AT 693), I changed 2 trains of tire in 1 year!!! They exploded on the road. I now got Pirelli Scorpion ST (new model STR). In rally we use the MICHELIN LTX.
For some cars, it can be interesting to change the shock absorbers as they are too smooth (on the american or on some english 4x4).
On my Patrol, I changed my tires for all terrain ones (model AT 50% road 50% off road), I change also the air filter conical K&N and I add a gallery with hallogen lights.
